BEGINNER LESSON / ABOUT 15 MINUTES
Your first useful
AI conversation.
You don’t need special commands. You need a clear task, a little context, and the habit of checking the answer.
01 / CHOOSE A SMALL TASK
Start with something you can judge.
Generative AI creates text, images, or other content in response to instructions. In a chat, your instruction is called a prompt. The answer is a draft you can question and revise.
Try rewriting a short email, organizing notes, or outlining a plan. Choose something where you know the facts. An assistant can sound confident while getting a detail wrong.
Open your first conversation
- Use an AI assistant you already have access to, or visit ChatGPT or Claude. Follow the service’s sign-in steps if asked.
- Start a new chat. The message box is where you type or paste your prompt.
- Use the fictional example below. Read the reply, then send your follow-up in the same chat so it has the earlier context.
You can also learn from the worked example on this page. No external account is required to complete this lesson.
Keep passwords and private customer information out of practice prompts. For workplace use, follow your organization’s policy and check the service’s data settings before sharing documents.
02 / GIVE THE AI A USEFUL BRIEF
Task. Context. Output.
Say what you want done, provide the facts it needs, and describe what a useful answer should look like. Plain language is enough.
Your ready-to-use prompt
Task: Draft a friendly appointment reminder. Context: A fictional customer has an appointment Friday at 10 am. Ask them to reply if they need to reschedule. Output: Under 80 words, with a subject line. Do not invent a location or cancellation policy.
This worksheet assembles your text. It does not send it to an AI service or save your draft.

Illustrative response to the customer email prompt · written for this lesson
Subject: Reminder: your Friday appointment
Hi there,
A friendly reminder that your appointment is Friday at 10 am. Please reply if you need to reschedule.
We look forward to seeing you!
Why it fits: it keeps the supplied day and time, includes a reply request, and does not add a fee or address. In a real workflow you would confirm the actual calendar date and time zone before sending.
AI replies will vary. The goal is to meet your requirements, not reproduce these exact words.
03 / IMPROVE THE ANSWER
The follow-up is part of the skill.
Read the first answer. Name one thing to change and one thing to preserve. Keep the conversation going until the result is useful.
Try this follow-up for customer email
Make it warmer and reduce it to 50 words. Keep the day and time unchanged.
If the reply misses information, supply the missing facts or ask it to list what it still needs. Start a fresh chat when you move to an unrelated task.
Before you use the result
- Facts: compare names, dates, prices, and promises with the original information.
- Sources: open links and confirm that they support the claims. Asking the same AI “are you sure?” is not independent verification.
- Fit: check the audience, tone, and requested format. Edit anything that doesn’t sound like you.
- Action: approve the final version yourself before sending, publishing, or using it to make a decision.
04 / CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING
Three situations. Your judgment.
Choose an answer for each. You’ll get an explanation and can try again. This practice check does not change your full-course progress.
